Greek Trireme
"Battle of Salamis"
Construction kit - around 480 BC
The model represents a Greek trireme from the time of the Battle of Salamis
(480 BC). According to authentic depictions, there were 27 rowers on each side
at the lowest level, 27 rowers on the second row of benches and 31 rowers on the
third row. As with other ships from the period, the triremes were steered with
wide oars on the quarterdeck. Apart from these 170 rowers, from the poorest
class of the free people, there were another 30 people on the ship.
In good conditions, the trireme could reach speeds of up to 12 km per hour. To
sink ships, a nose on the bow was used, with which the ship bored into the
enemy's hull. The oarsmen took care of the propulsion, the sails were only used
for longer voyages. During combat, the sails were lowered together with the mast
towards the quarterdeck and the ship was propelled solely by the oarsmen.
